January 4, 1889: California Assemblyman E.E. Edwards submitted a bill “An Act to Create the County of Orange,” dividing part of Los Angeles County to create Orange County. The bill was signed into law by California Governor Robert Waterman on March 11, 1889 (read more in 2010 Orange County Register article “How Orange County Came To Be).” Source of this date comes from the great timeline compiled by Studio for Southern California History (requires scrolling right). The photos are from the Los Angeles Public Library photo archive.
