On January 6, 1915, the first Van De Kamp’s shop opened as potato chip stand in downtown Los Angeles, at 2nd & Spring. (See LA Times article). Potato chips were initially called “Saratoga Chips” (because they were invented in Saratoga Springs, New York). By 1916, Van De Kamp’s had five downtown Saratoga Chip stands and opened their first bakery in 1921. This image came from nice little October 2011 article by the Daily Breeze.
