January 10, 1910: Los Angeles hosted the first Aviation Meet in the US (read the event as reported in the 1910 Los Angeles Herald). While France hosted the first international Aviation Meet in 1909, this 1910 event in Los Angeles marked the beginning of the aviation industry in the region. In a 2010 essay published in LA Observed:

The meet attracted 225,000 spectators over ten days to Dominguez Field and launched the local airplane business. Famous fliers liked what they saw and stuck around to build planes; L.A. city boosters liked what they saw, and looked to aviation as the future of Southern California.

The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum, which hosted the original event in 1910, held events throughout 2010 celebrating the centennial of this important event (photos from its Flickr group).
