Happy 101st birthday Van Nuys! From LA Observed, upon Van Nuys’ centennial in 2011:

On Feb. 22, 1911, trains from Los Angeles delivered the first buyers of vacant lots to the new town of Van Nuys. Named for an L.A. developer and hotelier who married into a ranching family, Van Nuys was the first farm town to be subdivided out of the former Lankershim wheat fields that covered almost half of the San Fernando Valley.

On March 10, 2012 at 2pm in the downtown Central Library, Kevin Roderick (of LA Observed) will present photos from the Valley Times, as archived in the Los Angeles Public Library.
