Mar 5, 1963: Wham-O patented the hula-hoop. Founders (& USC graduates) Richard Knerr & Arthur “Spud” Melin began Wham-O in Knerr family garage in South Pasadena. The company sold 25 million hoops in the first 4 months. While hula hooping isn’t as popular as it was then, some hoopers are still trying to set records including Dizzy Hips (http://www.dizzyhips.com) and New York’s Ashita Furman (who holds the record for the largest hoop spun 16 feet, 5 inches).
